A Milestone Month for The Heritage at Old Town

June was a milestone month for The Heritage at Old Town. With shovels officially in the ground and residents coming together to celebrate, the vision of a more inclusive, connected community in Old Town Alexandria is well on its way to becoming reality.

Breaking Ground on Block 4

On June 18, Jair Lynch Real Estate Partners broke ground on Block 4 of The Heritage at Old Town, a transformative, mixed-income development located at 431 S. Columbus Street. The ceremony brought together public officials, project partners, and community leaders to celebrate the start of construction on this $160+ million redevelopment.

“Today is not just about breaking ground, it’s about building futures,” said Jair Lynch, President and CEO of Jair Lynch Real Estate Partners. “Block 4 is the cornerstone of a larger vision for a connected, inclusive community in Old Town Alexandria.”

City of Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins called the development “the gateway to our city,” adding, “How amazing is it that we get to have a project that represents our values of being welcoming, of being inclusive, and of being a place that contributes to the vibrancy and quality of life in our community.”

The groundbreaking ceremony included remarks from leaders at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Virginia Housing, Virginia DHCD, the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and the City of Alexandria, culminating in a ceremonial shovel-turning to mark the beginning of construction.

Celebrating with community

Days later, on June 21, the project team hosted a community block party onsite to celebrate the groundbreaking milestone with residents. Nearly 100 guests enjoyed an afternoon filled with food, music, games, and crafts.

Free boxed lunches, sodas, cotton candy, and popcorn kept guests refreshed while kids took part in soccer darts, arcade games, face painting, and hands-on crafts. The event embodied the spirit of The Heritage, celebrating progress while fostering connection, joy, and a strong sense of community.

What’s Ahead

Located at 505 S. Alfred Street, Block 4 will deliver 310 apartment homes, 210 market-rate and 100 affordable, within a five-story building featuring underground parking, a rooftop terrace, pool, clubroom, and fitness center. Construction is expected to take approximately 27 months, with future phases planned to offer additional high-quality housing and community amenities.
